The Connection Between Well-Being and Health

The Connection Between Well-Being and Health

Health is a condition of complete physical, mental and emotional well-being where infirmity and disease are absent. The word “health” is derived from the Latin root which means to maintain or sustain. In its simplest form, health is the ability to flourish with less effort, where people are able to enjoy their life without having to put forth great effort. This state of well being contributes significantly to the productivity of individuals and is a major factor contributing to quality of life.

There are many components that contribute to overall health and wellness. These include diet, exercise, psychological factors, family and community support and lifestyle choices. It is important for all individuals to make wise food and healthy lifestyle choices to achieve the desired results. While making these choices, it is important to consider what we place into our mouths. What we put into our bodies can directly affect how we feel. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to our dietary choices and make sure to eat a balanced diet full of nutrients, especially Vitamin D which has been shown to reduce both blood pressure and stress.

Stress has been linked to both physical illness as well-being and many individuals recognize the link between these two factors. However, it is also known to be a contributing factor to poor health conditions such as fatigue, heart disease, and depression as well. Stress is an individual’s reaction to either a threat or reality and it is not always a bad thing. However, individuals who have too much stress on their mind have been found to be more susceptible to both illness and physical problems than individuals with less stress. It has been found that individuals who experience frequent changes in daily routines are at greater risk for developing illness and poor physical health due to the way that they deal with everyday demands.

Illness and physical problems can also occur as a result of poor lifestyle choices. These lifestyle choices may include substance abuse, smoking, obesity, unhealthy diets, lack of exercise, and lack of social interaction. Poor diet and exercise are directly associated to an unhealthy body mass index and higher chances of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and certain types of cancer. The consequences of this poor diet and exercise are long term and unfortunately, fatal. This poor diet and exercise lead to a body that is not able to fight off infections and diseases and in turn becomes prone to sickness and disease. This unhealthy lifestyle is one of the greatest contributing factors to illnesses and poor health status.

Mental wellness is also linked to physical wellness. Many people associate the two terms together, but they do not realize how far the two actually go. It is possible for someone to be healthy physically, yet still be suffering from mental disorders and disease. It has been established that stress, depression, and other mental illnesses will affect the body’s ability to fight infections and diseases. The physical and mental aspects of human health must be treated separately and in tandem for optimal levels of health.

Physical well-being and mental health are interrelated in a relationship that is not always understood. Stress and depression are extremely common in today’s society and can greatly impact your physical well being and mental health. By making small changes to your lifestyle, you can improve your odds of living a happy and healthy life. You may not see immediate results, but over time you will begin to feel and see the positive effects of your better lifestyle choices. Illness and disease can have a significant negative impact on your quality of life and it is important to know your options and how to combat them. The solutions are within your reach, it is simply a matter of taking action now and incorporating it into your lifestyle.
